These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) govern how Principles of Intelligence (“PrincInt”, “PIBBSS” “we,” “us,” “our”) delivers educational programs, community activities, and events to individuals (“you,” “participants”) who engage with our work. These Terms must be read alongside our Privacy Policy and are accepted when you participate in our programs and activities.

1. About Us

Principles of Intelligence is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation incorporated in Minnesota (EIN 33-4129337). We advance AI safety research by supporting promising researchers through fellowship programs, building an engaged alumni community, and providing educational resources to the AI safety field.

All programs and activities are offered free of charge. Participation is voluntary. We do not provide programs to individuals under 18.

2. Scope of Programs and Activities

Depending on your engagement with us, we may provide:

  • Research Programs – Structured research fellowships in AI safety (governed primarily by individual Fellowship Agreements)
  • Educational Content – Reading groups, workshops, seminars, and research training
  • Community Events – Retreats, conferences, meetups, and networking opportunities
  • Alumni Network – Ongoing engagement and support for former fellows
  • Newsletter – Updates on AI safety research, programs, and opportunities
  • Online Platforms – Access to communication tools (e.g., Slack, Discord) and shared resources

Note for Fellows

If you are accepted into a PrincInt fellowship, your participation will be governed primarily by a Fellowship Agreement between you and PrincInt. That Agreement is the main contractual document for the fellowship relationship. These Terms supplement the Fellowship Agreement for other aspects of engagement (e.g., events, alumni activities, community platforms).

Participation in structured programs may require submitting application forms, attending interviews or selection meetings, and providing research proposals or work samples.

Acceptance into programs is selective and based on:

  • Alignment with PrincInt’s mission and program goals
  • Research interests and background
  • Available capacity and resources

For further details about our Acceptance process, please visit our Programs page.

3. What We Expect From Participants

By participating in our  activities, you agree to:

  • Provide accurate information in application forms and communications
  • Engage meaningfully and respectfully in programs, events, and discussions
  • Follow community standards and behave professionally on all platforms (Slack, Discord, Zoom, etc.)
  • Notify us if your availability changes or you can no longer participate
  • Respect confidentiality when working with unpublished research or internal discussions
  • Comply with event-specific rules (e.g., Event Code of Conduct)

When We May Restrict Access

We reserve the right to pause or withdraw your access to our programs or platforms in cases of:

  • Disrespectful, harmful, or harassing conduct
  • Violations of our Anti-Harassment Policy or Event Code of Conduct
  • Persistent inactivity that impacts the experience of others
  • Misuse of internal platforms or breaches of confidentiality
  • Academic dishonesty or research misconduct

We will communicate such decisions clearly and provide an opportunity to address concerns where appropriate. However for serious conduct violations we reserve the right to terminate your access immediately without prior notification of reasons.

4. Data Handling & Communications

We handle personal data in accordance with our Privacy Policy. This includes data submitted through:

  • Fellowship and event application forms
  • Participation logs and research progress tracking
  • Community platform activity (Slack, Discord, etc.)
  • Survey responses and feedback forms
  • Alumni engagement records

See our Privacy Policy for full details on data rights and retention periods.

5. Fellowship Agreements

If you are accepted into a PrincInt fellowship, you will enter into a separate Fellowship Agreement that governs:

  • Fellowship duration and expectations
  • Research project scope and deliverables
  • Stipend amounts and payment terms (if applicable)
  • Intellectual property and publication rights
  • Termination conditions

The Fellowship Agreement is the primary governing document for the fellowship relationship. In case of conflict between these Terms and a Fellowship Agreement, the Fellowship Agreement takes precedence for matters directly related to the fellowship.

6. Community Events & Retreats

When you participate in our events (retreats, workshops, conferences), additional terms may apply:

  • Event Code of Conduct – Specific behavioral expectations for the event
  • Anti-Harassment Policy – Zero-tolerance policies for harassment or discrimination
  • Logistics Requirements – Dietary preferences, accessibility needs, travel arrangements

You will be informed of event-specific terms during registration. By attending, you agree to comply with these additional terms.

7. Alumni Engagement

After completing a PrincInt fellowship or another one of our programs, you may choose to remain engaged as an alumnus/a. This includes:

  • Receiving alumni newsletters and event invitations
  • Participating in annual impact surveys
  • Attending alumni retreats or workshops
  • Accessing career support and networking opportunities

Alumni engagement is entirely voluntary. You can opt out at any time by responding to our annual survey to decline further contact, or by emailing [email protected] to request removal from alumni mailing lists.

See our Privacy Policy for details on alumni data retention.

8. Newsletter Subscriptions

Our newsletter is free and voluntary. By subscribing, you will receive:

  • Updates on PrincInt fellowship programs and deadlines
  • AI safety research news and resources
  • Announcements about events and opportunities

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every newsletter email.

While we strive to be as accurate as possible, we do not guarantee that our newsletter content will always be error-free. Do not take anything in our newsletter as professional advice, although we encourage you to engage and advance on the research proposals that you read in our newsletter using your independent judgment.

9. Donations (If Applicable)

If you choose to donate to us, we will process your payments via secure third-party platforms (e.g., Manifund).

Please note that payment providers have independent Terms & Conditions and Privacy Notices which you will have to access directly should you want to find out more about how payment details are managed.

We do not store full payment credentials. Donation data is used solely for receipts, tax compliance, and acknowledgment.

Donations are voluntary and do not influence fellowship application decisions or acceptance into other Programs, access to resources or events.

PrincInt is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. U.S. donations may be tax-deductible, but we do not make such guarantees as we are not financial advisors. Please, consult your tax advisor for guidance.

10. Program Discretion & Changes

We strive to deliver programs reliably, but due to limited capacity, funding constraints, and evolving priorities, we reserve the right to:

  • Decline or defer applications to programs
  • Change program timelines, formats, or content
  • Replace facilitators or mentors
  • Pause or cancel underperforming or under-resourced programs
  • Adjust fellowship structures or requirements

We will communicate major changes in advance where feasible, but reserve the right to act quickly when necessary (e.g., funding changes, facilitator availability).

11. No Guarantee of Outcomes

PrincInt programs are educational and community-based. Participation does not guarantee:

  • Future employment in AI safety research
  • Admission to graduate programs or research positions

We are not responsible for third-party decisions (e.g., employers, universities, or grantmakers to whom you may be referred).

While we support your development and can provide connections, career outcomes depend on many factors beyond our control.

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • Principles of Intelligence provides programs and resources “as is” without warranties

We will notify you of material changes via email, with reasonable advance notice if such changes affect the time commitments you had made to us and/ or changes affect your personal resources. For minor updates, we will simply modify these Terms and update the “Last updated” date at the top of this document.

These Terms, together with:

  • Our Privacy Policy
